Volunteer work in 2023 at pre-coronavirus levels
Good news! The 2023 figures from CBS indicate that49 percentof the population aged 15 and over has volunteered for an organization or association at least once in the past twelve months. During the pandemic, this was an average of 41 percent. We are now back to the pre-pandemic level.
The figures come from the annual survey Social Cohesion and Well-being. In 2023, at the request of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, and the Association of Dutch Volunteer Organizations, additional questions were added. These included what people consider important for organizations to do for their volunteers. Across all age groups, the proportion of volunteers increased in 2023, reaching a level similar to before the pandemic. Among those aged 65 and older, the proportion of volunteers is even higher than in 2019.
This research also revealed that in 2023, volunteers were more likely to engage in occasional (now and then or one-time) volunteering than in 2022. The proportion of those doing regular (weekly or monthly) volunteering was slightly lower in 2023 than in 2022.
Other conclusions:
- Most volunteers are active in sports clubs;
- Care volunteers are most often active on a weekly basis;
- Thank you for your appreciation!
