Why employees drop out of well-intentioned initiatives

Many companies in Amsterdam are committed to social initiatives. The intention is good, but we often see that employees drop out over time or do not sign up at all. Not out of unwillingness, but because it does not align well in practice.

From our experience, we see a number of clear causes:

  • No ownership: When initiatives are rolled out top-down, it doesn’t feel like something from the employees themselves. Without room for personal input, engagement quickly disappears.
  • The non-binding and unstructured: One-time actions certainly inspire, but without continuity (repetitive) and clear goals, the effect quickly fades away.
  • No connection to work: If an initiative is separate from someone’s daily work or expertise, it doesn’t resonate with everyone. Often, that connection is the key to enthusiasm.
  • No time = no priority: If no time is allocated for it during working hours, it will always lose out to daily tasks.
  • Managers do not participate: Leadership is crucial. If managers/team leaders do not participate or support it, employees feel less inclined to engage. Conversely, visible enthusiasm creates momentum.

How do you ensure engagement?
