Ingrid reads to Nick, 6 years old, every week. His parents are from Iran. This allows her to visit people she would never otherwise meet. Nick has taught her how to make jokes.
Volunteers’ Café West: plenty of inspiration for volunteer work
Last Thursday, October 12, the cozy space of the Playground de Gibraltar was filled with people looking for (more) volunteer work. First, a delicious bowl of pumpkin soup and bread with hummus, followed by seven pitches from organizations from the West. Just to recap:
1. From Gibraltar
Playground De Gibraltar is very unique and special. It is an inclusive playground where every child can play together! There is a wheelchair swing, a wide slide, and much more. Whoever you are and whatever you do; De Gibraltar is a home for everyone! View the vacancy for Host/Hostess.
2. Foundation Neighborhood Light
Stichting Buurtlicht connects in the West by projecting art and other images onto buildings, such as the Water Tower in Westerpark. View the volunteer activities that you can do at Buurtlicht.
3. St Informal Care and Dementia
Mantelzorg & Dementia is there for everyone dealing with dementia and/or feelings of loneliness. We provide support based on the vision of the Meeting Centers. This has been developed by VUmc. View the volunteer activities of Informal Care and Dementia.
4. Cordaan Client Transport and Transportation
Elderly people who want to participate in daytime activities are transported by volunteers in 8-person vans. View the job vacancy for driver.
5. Neighborhood Team Amsterdam West
The neighborhood team is a place in the area where residents can go with questions. For example, if someone is struggling to make ends meet, wants more social contacts, or wants to live independently at home for as long as possible. All kinds of questions that the neighborhood team can help with for free. There are also consultation hours for financial questions and housing where volunteers assist. View the vacancy for the housing consultation.
6. SOB
The SOB provides language lessons in Amsterdam. Our lessons are aimed at teaching students a basic knowledge of Dutch as quickly as possible, so they feel at home in our city and in our country. Not only the Dutch language is covered in our courses, but also the culture is of great importance. We offer courses in the Dutch language and culture to non-Dutch speakers in Amsterdam (West), in small groups, at various levels, with a lot of individual attention. View the job openings at SOB.
7. Together Strength
Stichting Samen Kracht is an organization in Amsterdam Bos en Lommer that is committed to vulnerable residents in the neighborhood. The majority of this network lives in the Kolenkitbuurt, just like Nadia and Mohamed, the founders and executors. The organization is a quiet force in the vibrant Bos en Lommer. That the neighborhood is constantly changing goes without saying. However, not all residents can benefit from these developments. This makes these residents vulnerable or lonely. View the job openings from Samen Kracht.
