There are more and more young people who volunteer. For example, because they want to do something good for others. Or because they want to work on their CV and get a head start on their future job. Volunteering is an ideal way to develop your talents and skills.

What kind of volunteer work can you do?

In Amsterdam alone, there are approximately 250,000 people who volunteer. This means that there are a lot of different and fun opportunities. Yes, walking with the elderly or playing bingo is an option, but also consider: helping at an event – reading to children – caring for animals at a petting zoo – being a DJ at a local radio station – cooking for homeless people.Consider for yourself:

  1. What makes you happy?
  2. Which talent(s) do you want to use?
  3. How much time do you have available?

Can I earn money from volunteering?

You may receive an expense allowance for volunteering, or your travel costs may be reimbursed. This depends on the organization you are volunteering for; they determine this themselves and are not obligated to do so. There are some rules for this. The government has determined that an expense allowance can be a maximum of €180 per month, with a maximum of €1800 per year per volunteer. You do not have to pay tax on this amount. In addition, as a volunteer, you may not receive more than €5 per hour, and if you are under 22 years old, not more than €2.50 per hour.
