Ingrid reads to Nick, 6 years old, every week. His parents are from Iran. This allows her to visit people she would never otherwise meet. Nick has taught her how to make jokes.
Yvonne is a volunteer in the control room of the Animal Ambulance. “It is also great fun to be able to make people happy when their pet is found again.”
“I know deep down that I am a valuable woman. But doing volunteer work also makes me feel that way again. This way I can contribute to society, keep my social contacts up to date, and feel useful again. Yes, that brings me joy.”
Cynthia Jhinnoe (35) has an impressive resume as a volunteer. At the age of sixteen, she was already involved in the establishment of the youth information café The Site. After many volunteer positions, she is now active for Burennetwerk in the Baarsjes.
MUG photographer Sake Rijpkema collaborates with Volunteer Center Amsterdam to create photo reports about Amsterdam volunteers. A new series is published every month on the MUG and VCA websites.
