Successful Volunteer Language Café
The OBA Postjesweg in Nieuw-West was the setting for the Volunteer Café Language on May 8. From six o’clock, local residents interested in volunteering in the field of language began to arrive. For example, by helping out at a language café or as a language buddy for a neighbor. After a welcome speech by Jelle Guijt (VCA) and Fouzia Ben Boussounna (Leef en Leer!), visitors were able to engage with the ten different organizations present that are in need of more language volunteers. Everyone soon found themselves chatting with each other while holding a plate of food or a drink. The amazing food was prepared by Zoubida Salhi and enhanced the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The maximum of fifty visitors had signed up, making it a well-attended evening. One visitor mentioned that she had actually wanted to volunteer in language for a long time but never knew where to start. When she found the flyer in her mailbox, she immediately knew she wanted to come, as it was the ideal place for her to easily connect with organizations. And that was precisely the purpose of this Language Volunteer Café. Because language volunteers are greatly needed. It is repeatedly shown in scientific research: language is a gateway. If you speak the language, you understand the world you live in, can pursue an education, and have job opportunities. In short, a good foundation of language knowledge helps people progress.
The participating organizations (VoorleesExpress, Vrouw&Vaart/Daadkr8, ABC de Regenboog, De Oase, De Opgang, Taalbom, Eigenwijks de Aker, Marhaba, Tituskapel, and Combiwel het Anker) were also enthusiastic; it was a great way for them to connect with potential volunteers. The volunteer café was organized in collaboration with OBA/Leef en Leer!, the Municipality of Amsterdam, and TIP. We want to extend a big thank you to all visitors and the participating organizations for their attendance and the successful evening.
