Mohamed makes soup for people who cannot leave their homes.
“If everyone helps each other a little bit, things will work out fine,” thought Mohamed as he started making the Moroccan soup harira.During the week, Mohamed has to go to work, but he has free time on the weekends. “I see that many people are panicking. The idea came about when people started hoarding. But what about the elderly? I thought. And others who can’t leave the house? They have nothing to eat. I wanted to do something for them.”
High interest
And so he made large pots of harira in his own Amsterdam kitchen. He posted a message on theFacebook group Amsterdam Corona Helpthat people who wanted to have soup could sign up with him. “There was a lot of enthusiasm and people were so grateful. The soup went to the North, to Bos en Lommer, to the Baarsjes; in short: throughout the whole city. Since I don’t have transportation myself, I asked for the help of other volunteers here.”
“Actually, you should always take care of those who need it.”
“For now, I will continue with this! It really gives me satisfaction that I can make a difference. It’s just a shame that I only think about doing this now, now that there is a crisis. Actually, you should always take care of those in need. It’s a small effort.”Text: Michelle Engel
