“Where I can give, I give because giving recharges me.” That motto has become the guiding principle in Maroua’s life choices. For the past year, she has been volunteering every Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm at the Leefkringhuis in Amsterdam Noord. It’s quite demanding, both physically and mentally. However, the satisfaction and appreciation she receives make her efforts completely worthwhile. She had been thinking about doing volunteer work for a while. After a period of being busy chasing various goals, it was time for reflection. Maroua: “It was necessary to bring balance back into my life, and I had to put myself first. I got to know myself again and experienced my own strength, love, and light. I started as a Mindfulness Youth Coach. It is beautiful work and is going well. When I felt my own balance, I wanted to share that with others. That’s why one day I decided to step into the Leefkringhuis.”

Together we roll up our sleeves

The team she works with for distributing food packages is just like a big family. There is a great atmosphere and they are all there for each other. Maroua: “They are all wonderful people who give themselves wholeheartedly. I immediately clicked with them during my first meeting, and they were able to involve me quickly. At first as a hostess welcoming the clients, but now I also keep track of the lists and help with carrying crates and pallets or distributing the items. It is very diverse, each time is different, and each client is different too.”

Everyone can use a little help sometimes

She is genuinely interested in the people who come there. They often share their stories, sometimes they are quite moving. But also often very beautiful or hopeful. She offers everyone a listening ear, without judging. Maroua: “I believe that essentially everyone is the same, and from that basic idea you can seek connection. I always try to do that, I want to share my joy and let my light shine. In this way, I hope to inspire others. People can sometimes be in a difficult situation temporarily, yet even that will pass. Learn your lessons and come out stronger. Then you are able to help others. Try, learn, and inspire!”
