“I am trying to literally get people moving again”
Who are you?“I am Mohamed Marrabou, 52 years old, and father of five children. I have been living in the North for 35 years.”What do you do in your daily life?“I am currently training for the full marathon in Genk, Belgium; I am doing this together with my running buddy and coach Els Annegarn (she is the world champion in the 100 km run). Recently, I ran the marathon in Egmond aan Zee, despite very harsh weather, I achieved a good time. Last year, I also participated in the Dam tot Damloop; a great experience, especially considering I have only been an active runner since June 2014.”What do you do as a volunteer?“I am an assistant coach at the running group of Doras; a project to get people moving and in contact with each other. The running group meets twice a week in Noorderpark; on Monday afternoons from 4 to 5 pm and on Wednesday afternoons from 5 to 6 pm. People of all levels participate. I myself started as a participant in this running group over half a year ago, a participant with very poor fitness, and now I am an assistant coach heading towards a marathon!”My most beautiful experience is…“Working with the group, being together; you get to know people, and some like to talk about personal things they are dealing with. I love sharing stories. We have a walking and a running group; I enjoy connecting and motivating people to keep going. A highlight for me was when the choir Noord Zingt performed at the Christmas celebration for Doras’ running group.”What is your tip for people who want to start doing volunteer work?“Just do it! Making contact with people is what energizes you. So, come walk with me, I’ll introduce you to everyone!”Are you also interested in volunteering? Check out these job vacancies.
