Sophie is a volunteer at Het Lichthuis: a place where people with mental health problems can go on weekends when regular care is closed. “I think it’s important to be aware of people around you who are not doing so well. I do that in my own neighborhood as well, and I encourage everyone: approach someone who needs help or, for example, sells a homeless newspaper.”

Gerrit and Sophie are board members of the Amsterdam Association De Zondagsschilders. An association that stimulates the creativity of many Amsterdammers. Do you want to help them as a board member?

Jolanda has been volunteering for the Red Cross for six years. “I work in the Emergency Response department, which includes population care. Volunteers are deployed when there is, for example, a fire or a train accident. Currently, a lot of aid is being provided to the refugees from Ukraine.”

Rachel is celebrating this week that she has been a lunchtime supervisor at Rijk Kramerschool for 10 years. “It brings me a lot because you get a nice break, also outdoors in the fresh air, and you have nice contacts with your lunchtime colleagues, the teacher of your class, and of course with the children. I especially find the preschoolers really enjoyable.”

The Coffeehouse on Haarlemmerstraat is a safe haven for homeless or undocumented visitors. The foundation is a social enterprise largely run by and for participants, along with the necessary volunteers. Together, they ensure clean clothing, coffee, lunch, and the cleaning and green teams keep the environment clean and colorful.
