The volunteer CV of our mayor
Femke Halsema was sworn in as the new mayor of our city two years ago on July 12, 2018. The first female mayor of Amsterdam. So, she is celebrating her 2-year anniversary this week.
Did you know that she has also done a lot of volunteer work before this?We have listed what she has done as a volunteer and what her motivation was.
2012 – 2016Chairman of the Board – Refugee Foundation
“I have seen the need for assistance to refugees up close and I would like to get involved in that. This aid has made the countries in Africa dependent. Just giving money does not solve the great poverty in these countries. What remains necessary is simply emergency aid after a crisis.” – according to Halsema in 2012.
2011 – 2018No content to translate.Chairman of the Board – Zina Platform Foundation
Zina Platform is a theater company, an Arts and Culture Platform for Gentle Confrontation of the Daily sometimes Raw but Beautiful life.
2015 – 2018 Board Member – Start Foundation
The Start Foundation advocates for vulnerable people in society by creating jobs for those who, for various reasons, are unable to find employment independently. Femke Halsema: “Vulnerable people enrich society. A vulnerable person softens another.”
2015 – 2018Chairman – Association of Disability Care Netherlands (VGN)
“To make people with disabilities more visible, the VGN has launched the campaign ‘Nederland Onbeperkt’ at my initiative.”(text continues below this box)

2015 – 2018Ambassador – Foundation Life and Finance (LEF)
“People can suffer a lot from debt problems and struggle to get out of it. When you are deeply in debt, it affects your whole life: your job opportunities, your relationships, and your happiness. That’s why it’s so important to teach young people to handle money responsibly. Young people who are faced with the temptation of luxury goods every day and sometimes find it hard to say no often need a little help. They need to learn that money is not free and that debts can ruin their future. That’s what LEF offers: lessons in managing money for MBO students. I am very happy to support LEF in helping our youth with this!” – said Halsema in 2015.
2016 – 2018No content to translate.Chairman – Aidsfonds / Stopaidsnow
“AIDS still deserves all the attention. Every year, more than 1 million people die from the effects of AIDS. It is even the number 1 cause of death for women under 25. The AIDS epidemic is rampant, especially in countries in Africa and Asia, but also closer to home, in Eastern European countries. If we truly want to eliminate AIDS from the world by 2030, as agreed internationally, it requires money and effort. I am happy to commit myself to this.” – as stated by Halsema in 2016.
Congratulations mayor, on your 2-year anniversary!
