Steadily more Amsterdammers are signing up for volunteer work. Volunteer Center Amsterdam (VCA) sees a clear increase in the number of responses in the first months of 2026 to thejob board: in January 745 registrations, in February 783 and in March 755. For comparison: in the same period of 2025 there were 748, 692 and 633. This is a total increase of 10.1% compared to last year.

The growth shows that Amsterdammers are increasingly willing to actively contribute to their city. In particular, calls with a direct, tangible impact can count on interest. For example, there were many responses to a call from the Food Bank in Amsterdam-Noord, a hospice seeking extra support, and active volunteer work in nursing homes, such as caring for flowers.

Also, initiatives in the city center attract attention, such as cooking for homeless Amsterdammers. In addition, there is a lot of enthusiasm for volunteer work with children. Think of helping with homeschooling, mentoring children, or exploring together in the Hortus.

This development fits into a broader trend where engagement is expressed not only in words but also in concrete actions. Volunteering offers Amsterdammers an accessible way to make a difference close to home.
