Maarten has been the chairman of KansenNet since last year. He does this as a volunteer alongside his daily work as an organizational consultant. I detect idealism and passion in all volunteers here. That inspires me greatly.”The home base of KansenNet is the former, creatively renovated post office Post Oost. From here, and from various public places in the city, tailored assistance is provided in achieving their personal goals in the areas of work, entrepreneurship, and language acquisition. “This came across my path coincidentally,” Maarten explains. “Right from the first meeting, I could sense the enthusiasm of the organization, and that greatly appeals to me. Our activities can be divided into career coaching, sounding board for aspiring entrepreneurs, and helping by practicing to improve speaking and understanding Dutch.”

50 nationalities

“We received approximately 250 requests for coaching and language support in the past year. From re-entrants, beginners, refugees. From young to old. And from people of more than 50 different nationalities. Everyone in Amsterdam can make use of our services, there are no costs involved. This is possible thanks to a small subsidy from the municipality of Amsterdam, a contribution from the Oranje Fonds, and donations.”

Inspiring

“When I see the fantastic results that are being achieved, it gives everyone within the organization tremendous satisfaction. And that automatically brings a lot of joy. I also notice idealism and drive in all volunteers. And that particularly inspires me.”

Wishes

“We hope to continue doing this for a very long time. And we will do our best to reach even more people. And if people feel addressed (which really can’t be any other way):”New volunteers and interested individuals are welcome to join us.Interview: Jan Barnhoorn
