The pressure on volunteers in healthcare means that there is not always a safe and clearly defined work environment. How do volunteers and volunteer coordinators deal with this situation? We discussed this with volunteer Lodewijk de Mol van Otterloo and volunteer coordinator Alexander Regeling.

Earlier this year, all volunteers who signed up with VCA in 2023 received a questionnaire. We asked for their opinion on VCA’s services.
We have compiled the key findings.
How did you end up at Volunteer Center Amsterdam (VCA)?
82% came to VCA on their own initiative; most people know us through the internet (59%), friends/acquaintances (19%), or through an advertisement or social media (4%). 7.5% were referred by the municipality, a reintegration agency, the UWV, or another institution.

Give VCA 7 stars or more. Even 65% receive 8 stars or higher.
Getting started?
69% are currently active as volunteers. Half are active thanks to VCA.
The welfare sector is the most popular (49%), followed by arts & culture (26%), education (25%), informal care and charities (both 16%), Nature & environment and events (both 12%), and sports & recreation (11%).
89% feel this meets their expectations (very) well. 1% is currently not satisfied.
93% feel appreciated by the organization they are active in. More than half also consider this (very) important.
Who filled out the survey?
More than 70% are 51 years old or older. 20% of the participants are working while 38% are retired. 24% are not working. Approximately a quarter of the volunteers live in the South district, followed by Center with 16% and East with 14%.
