From blaring sirens to clowns
The Children’s Beast Party, the annual party at Artis for 1500 chronically ill and/or disabled children and their families. A special, carefree evening where children can momentarily forget about their illness. This is made possible by 1700 volunteers. Including Iris Kuethe.
Iris works as an animal caretaker at Artis, but she dedicates her free time to the months-long preparation of the Children’s Beast Party. These are separate activities. “Fifteen years ago, I started this because I really wanted to give this group of sick children a carefree evening at Artis. I could not have imagined that it would grow into such a huge party. The children can truly be themselves for a moment. Not being stared at or having to explain what’s wrong, just having fun and enjoying themselves.”Sharing joyThe organization is entirely run by volunteers. From drivers who drive the children and their families to the park with blaring sirens to clowns, and from face painters to animal caretakers who have come up with a fun experience. Everyone is kind, patient, and shares the joy with the children.
Touching“I myself have had an incredible variety of tasks over the years as a volunteer. Organizing a professional party involves a lot. This has helped me discover what I am good at and what I enjoy doing. Such as writing the minutes. But above all, the sense of togetherness makes this volunteer work so enjoyable. Because we really do it all together. And we give the children a very beautiful memory, which many will cherish for a long time. That is so nice. Those happy children and parents, it is very touching.”Title“A good volunteer is a volunteer whose commitment I find selfless. I have learned that my willingness to go for something does not have to depend on time and money, but that I simply do it because I have set that as my goal. It brings me a lot of love, respect, stress, and fun. And even a ‘Porum van Mokum’, a sculpted head of me – given to me by my fellow volunteers. How cool is that? Although I found it a lot of honor. I also won the title of Amsterdammer of the Year last year. Very special. But I don’t do it alone, and I couldn’t carry the title alone either, I thought, so I dedicated it to all the volunteers who help make the KinderBeestfeest a success.”Children’s Animal Partyis on June 5, 2015.Are you also interested in volunteering in the field of events?
