Fleur: “Planning, organizing, and supporting are in my blood. It’s something I’m good at. The commercial world where I performed these tasks unfortunately got the best of me. I ended up in a burnout and I’m trying to slowly return to the workforce through this volunteer work.”‘Golden Men’ is a project where Fleur ended up as a volunteer through connections. She takes care of the PR and guides a part of the project. Men work here in a familiar environment on returning to life and society. Anyone can end up in a situation where you don’t know how to move forward. Taking the positive and courageous step to leave your house after a long time, attend classes, develop yourself, and meet others.

“I am a Golden Woman”

A familiar step for Fleur. “I think it’s a wonderful initiative, where I recognize many of the difficulties that men experience from my own situation. Not being able to participate in life anymore and missing the connection is an experience I share with the men. The safe environment and understanding of my situation by the people at Daadkr8, the social organization behind this project, make me enjoy working as a volunteer. It gives me satisfaction to be meaningful and make a difference in the lives of the men. It’s very special to gain access to the men’s world of experience. Seeing results, receiving appreciation, working together, and feeling equality feels so good.”

Powerful guys who show vulnerability

“The men follow a customized program in which they learn a lot from and with each other. Sports and exercise, computer lessons, Dutch lessons, workshops, and training to learn how to deal with yourself and your health. The discovery that you are not the only one with a problem, the courage to be vulnerable makes these men powerful guys. It is beautiful to see how the men become aware of their own qualities and positive sides and how they can use them for others. Afterwards, we aim for the men to start working as volunteers, apply for jobs, or continue their education. Men act as ambassadors and share their story and the significance the project has had with others. On the radio, at a mental health congress, at Nieuw Metropolis, a TED talk at Pakhuis de Zwijger, etc. And sometimes the journey goes to other municipalities where they share information on how to reach this target group.”

“I will continue with this.”

“By doing this special volunteer work, my decision is firm: I want a job in this sector. Setting up projects and being responsible for a good implementation is in my DNA. I would like to use these qualities outside of this volunteer work to help others progress.”
