Energy, Collaboration and Atmosphere in the Board: A Challenging Balance

Board members of foundations and associations often dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their organization. At the same time, many board members experience that certain tasks sometimes cost more energy than they would like, that tensions or misunderstandings creep into the team, or that it is difficult to hear and see everyone in the organization. Perhaps it feels like certain topics keep coming back in meetings, that tasks “have to” be picked up, or that not everyone seems equally involved. Recognizable? These are signals that can affect the enjoyment and effectiveness of the board.

Energy Boosters and Drainers

Many board members notice that some tasks require a lot of energy, while others actually give energy. Sometimes we do things because “we have to,” even though they do not match our talents or interests. This can lead to fatigue, frustration, or a feeling of resistance. By openly discussing which tasks give energy and which drain energy, the board can better distribute tasks, set priorities, and allow everyone to experience more satisfaction in their role.

Collaboration, Atmosphere and Communication

In every board, small irritations or misunderstandings sometimes arise: meetings run sluggishly, discussions get stuck, or it is difficult to openly share your opinion. This does not mean something is “wrong,” but it does offer an opportunity to make collaboration smoother. By reflecting together on how decisions are made, how ideas are shared, and how everyone feels heard, a more positive atmosphere emerges. This helps the board function more effectively and strengthens mutual trust.

Why Pay Attention to These Themes?

When board members consciously reflect on their energy sources and their way of working together, they become more motivated and there is more enjoyment in the board. This leads to better decision-making, less frustration, and a more constructive board culture. Ultimately, the entire organization benefits from a board that is in balance and collaborates well.
