Community Service Internships for Het Noorderlicht

During the week of March 25-29, 2019, as a student of Het Noorderlicht, you will do a community service internship for two afternoons at an organization in Amsterdam North. Usually you do this in a small group. Finding an internship placement works as follows:

-> Choose three internship placements below that you find interesting and discuss them with your mentor
-> You will be placed at one of those locations
-> Before the project week, you will visit the organization once to get acquainted

Sector: Arts and Culture

What does the organization do?
Noordje organizes art and language projects. Children aged 6 to 12 can come to Noordje’s Writing Lab to write stories and do schoolwork.

What can you do here?
When you do your internship at Noordje, you will provide support in our Writing Lab: helping with homework and guiding creative activities. Internship days are Monday through Thursday, from 14:15 to approximately 17:15.

What does the organization do?
SPIN has eight playgrounds in North. From these playgrounds, playground leaders together with volunteers ensure safe and attractive play spaces, with all kinds of creative, sports and social activities. We facilitate connections between children, parents and neighborhood residents.

What can you do here?
In pairs, you assist the playground leaders in welcoming children to the playground, organizing activities and performing small maintenance tasks in the playground.

What does the organization do?
We are a meeting place for the neighborhood.

What can you do here?
You can help in the vegetable gardens, but you are also welcome to create and carry out an activity for neighborhood residents, or help with other tasks (like distributing flyers).

What does the organization do?
We are a housing corporation. This means we build and rent out homes. But we also ensure that the neighborhood stays clean, safe and livable.

What can you do here?
During the internship week, we will give the neighborhood (Plan van Gool, near the school) a major cleanup, hopefully together with many students from Het Noorderlicht. We will make them fun and useful days, with outdoor work, information and a competition.

What does the organization do?
At NoordOogst we love good food produced in a sustainable way. We are an urban farming project in Amsterdam North that is accessible to everyone and where anyone can come to be inspired to be more conscious about food. Together we are strong, and that is why NoordOogst works with countless volunteers, neighborhood residents and a large group of green entrepreneurs.

What can you do here?
Outdoor farming activities. Digging, sowing, mowing and green maintenance.

What does the organization do?
We ensure that the needs and wishes of residents in the Van de Pek neighborhood receive attention and are realized as much as possible. We have care, green and cleaning programs.

What can you do here?
In February and March we will be making several garden improvements: in public green spaces and also in inner courtyards. There will be a butterfly garden and we will create a bee corridor. You can also help make small scarecrows. We will write a piece for the website and create a poster to explain our work and get people excited.

What does the organization do?
We organize after-school courses at 30 primary schools in Amsterdam North. We have a very wide range including: carpentry, dancing, cooking, circus, painting, fashion design, 3D printing, theater and music.

What can you do here?
You will support a course teacher in class. You help the children where needed. For example, you help them make an artwork or lend a hand when they walk on a ball during circus class. It is helpful if you come by bike, so you can easily travel to different courses. Do you enjoy working with children? Then you will definitely love doing your internship with us!

What does the organization do?
Dock is an organization that helps young people develop their talents and search together for answers to questions you may have as a young person. We offer workshops and in our production houses we have specially equipped spaces such as music and dance studios. In addition to the workshops, you can turn your ideas into cool activities that we carry out together with your friends and you.

What can you do here?
When you do your internship at Dock, you will design and execute your own project, supervised by our youth workers. Together with you, we will discuss a number of themes on which we would like your opinion, such as crime and the dangers of social media. You know what is going on and how we can best discuss such topics with young people your age.

What does the organization do?
Our foundation was established to combat poverty. Residents of Amsterdam North can bring in used or handmade items. A price is agreed upon at which the item is offered for sale in the shop on the Waddenweg or on the website. People also stop by for a chat and a cup of coffee or tea.

What can you do here?
The shop needs to be rearranged, the display window made attractive and clothing needs to be sorted. You also welcome customers who come in during the day.

What does the organization do?
Our Community Center is a meeting place for people from the neighborhood. All kinds of activities are organized and visitors come throughout the day with various questions or simply to have a cup of coffee.

What can you do here?
You help the manager with various tasks: welcoming and directing visitors, serving coffee and tea, assisting in the kitchen, etc.

What does the organization do?
In our neighborhood restaurants, we connect people from all walks of life to get to know each other better and create a better neighborhood. It starts with cooking and eating together.

What can you do here?
You will join the kitchen team. You help prepare the meal for a large group of neighborhood residents. Then you help with serving and cleaning up. Of course, you can eat along. The internship is on Monday and Wednesday from 14:00 to 20:00.

What does the organization do?
In Eduard Douwes Dekker, elderly people who need a lot of care reside. Some have physical complaints, some experience cognitive decline. We try to give everyone in our nursing home a pleasant place to live. We have a garden, recreation room and a restaurant, and each ward also has a living room where residents can go for a chat, a game or a cup of coffee.

What can you do here?
The interns help give residents a pleasant afternoon by bringing around food and drinks, helping with activities or going outside when the weather is nice.
