“Being productive feels good”
Joop Stoel (69) has been actively volunteering at the Dienstencentrum Landsmeer for eighteen years, several days a week.Wild Adventure“I used to be in the Merchant Navy, then worked as a driver, until my wife said it was time to be home more. I then started working at a car paint factory, starting as a jack-of-all-trades and worked my way up to branch manager. Unfortunately, at a fairly young age, I was forty, I was declared unfit for work after several serious back surgeries.”Music and bingo“Once when my daughter was playing a korfball match in Landsmeer and I urgently needed to make a phone call, I entered the Landsmeer Service Center. I liked the atmosphere there. I was asked to help out as a volunteer. At first, I thought I wouldn’t fit into the group, I was forty at the time. But I went to watch a few more times and then started delivering meals. I ran Restaurant 2000 together with fellow volunteers, which was a meal for residents of Landsmeer, Purmerland, and Den Ilp that we provided once a month with music and bingo.”
Own neighborhood“I have been running the buffet a few times a week for eighteen years now. I handle the purchases and also take care of the extras for activities, the tasty snacks for bridge, and klaverjassen. It’s a challenge for me to keep the budget low! I enjoy doing something for the elderly in their own neighborhood. I come from Kattenburg myself, where there used to be nothing for the elderly, they would sit outside in front of their houses on a chair when the weather was nice. Unfortunately, nowadays many community centers are being closed, and there are fewer and fewer activities.”Mr. Punctual“What I really like about this volunteer work is the freedom, I can work independently and if I want to know something, I just walk to the office. I am used to doing things my way, which can sometimes clash! I am quite a Stickler when it comes to cleaning, I got that from my time at the Wilde Vaart, if you didn’t keep it clean there, it would be full of vermin in no time!”For me, it’s a sport to keep the budget low!
Lol“The most important thing is the fun I have during my work, just being busy feels good. Also, the different people I meet, people with different perspectives, you learn from them.”Interested in volunteering in Landsmeer?
