Over 250,000 people in Amsterdam volunteer for others or for the city. They help someone with groceries, work behind the bar at a sports club, keep culture alive or contribute to green spaces. Together they share the load that makes our society kinder, more enjoyable and more beautiful. If we gave all volunteers in the city a light, the city would be beautifully illuminated! Experience what it can offer you and help light up the city.
There are so many possibilities. From one-off tasks to longer projects, from flexible participation to volunteering on a fixed day. It just depends on what you want and are looking for. But the great thing is: with more than hundreds of opportunities, there is always something that makes you happy, want to bet?!
You can look in our online job board (nearly 1,500 volunteer opportunities in Amsterdam) or make an appointment at one of our locations, and we will look and think along with you.
1. It is healthy
Helping others makes you healthier, happier and more relaxed, research shows. Some health experts even believe that doctors, in addition to exercise and healthy eating, should also recommend volunteering.
2. Meeting new people
Volunteering is the perfect way to meet other people and expand your network. You come into contact with others who share the same interests, so you might gain new friendships. You can also connect with people you would never otherwise meet. Guaranteed: great stories!
3. It is an indispensable part of society
In Amsterdam alone, no fewer than 250,000 people volunteer.
4. You can make a difference for someone else
As a volunteer, you make a difference in society or in someone’s day. You help someone else, in a way that suits you.
5. Discovering new places
Are you new to the city, for example? Volunteering gives you the chance to get to know your (new) neighbourhood and neighbours better or to become (more) familiar with the city.
6. Boost your CV
Are you between jobs? Want to gain (extra) work experience in the direction of your dream job? Through volunteering, you can easily expand your experience in an accessible way. In projects you choose yourself. This way you discover what suits you and develop your talents. A great stepping stone to more?
7. It is Fun!
Sometimes there are projects or tasks that you are so enthusiastic about that it is just really. Very. Fun to work on.
8. You stay active and feel useful
Whether you are retired, the children have left home, or for any other reason, volunteering is a great way to stay active and feel (continue to feel) socially involved. Four half-days a week or one per month. Whatever you want and are looking for!
9. Do it for the freebies
The slightly less selfless among us can also do it for the freebies: the free extras in exchange for some volunteer work. For example, at festivals: after a few hours behind the bar, you can still catch a concert by a top artist. Or in museums: free art viewing after first working at an information desk. Many organisations also show their appreciation for volunteers by giving a gift or organising an outing.
