Who are you and what do you do in your daily life?

I am Bata Imeri. I live in Buitenveldert and have been retired for 20 years after a busy working life at Schiphol. Since then, I have been doing a lot of volunteer work. I work behind the bar at the Huis van de Wijk Buitenveldert and occasionally help with parties by preparing snacks and welcoming guests.

My volunteer work – now almost a career, says Bata with a laugh – started at the Algemene Hulpdienst Buitenveldert. There, I visited older residents at home for social contacts. It was always nice to make someone happy with a chat.

What makes you happy?

I enjoy helping people, listening to their stories, and being together. It gives me a good feeling to see people go home with a smile. There are many lonely neighbors. Sometimes it is also sad, because every year one of the regular visitors passes away. That is why I find it important to create a pleasant atmosphere.

To whom did you last give a compliment? From whom did you receive a compliment?

I like to give compliments to young people who do their work well. This morning, for example, I gave a compliment to the volunteers at the polling station. It’s a long day for them, with a lot of responsibility. I also receive compliments when I’m behind the bar. People appreciate my interest and involvement in their stories. During our conversation, a fellow volunteer, Henk, walked by and called me a real pillar of support.

What is your favorite place in Amsterdam?

The Amsterdam canal belt, especially in the evenings during spring. And of course, Buitenveldert.

What is the most beautiful or important lesson you have learned in your life?

Since my youth, I have been involved with music. In the sixties, I came to Western Europe with an orchestra, where I played guitar. Live performances are always beautiful and special. Music connects people in a unique way and transcends language and background. That is why I am also a great admirer of the Thank You Day for volunteers in the South. Every year, in the Concertgebouw, we experience that connection during beautiful musical performances.
