“If you are in a wheelchair, it is often assumed that you are also limited in your mind”
Carla (53):“Before I get out of bed in the morning, I do my daily exercises. Before I became disabled – due to various chronic illnesses – I was a dancer and dance teacher, so training my body is still a part of my routine. I also always take my assistance dog out for a walk before breakfast, preferably to a park. In addition, I do strength training, wheelchair table tennis, and swimming every week.”Give a little push“Sometimes I have quiet days, then I create artworks or sit behind the sewing machine. I am adjusting all my clothes because my lower legs and my left forearm are amputated, and I spend the whole day in a wheelchair. Other days I do volunteer work. I want to contribute to society, have a partial daily occupation, and belong to a group. And help people who are in a similar situation as me, but who are not able to manage yet or just need a little push. I think foundation MEE is the ideal place for that. The organization where I myself, eight years ago, ended up as a client with a request for help.”
Craving for life“For this foundation, I now give presentations about people with disabilities, in addition, I support clients and participate in a reading group where we review various brochures from the foundation to see if they are understandable for people with different disabilities. This absolutely gives meaning to my life. The feeling that I matter, that I can make a difference, and motivate people.”Actress“Through the information sessions and workshops that I provide, I hope to help people have a better understanding of each other. When you are in a wheelchair, it is often assumed that you are also limited in your mind. Fortunately, we often laugh about that. This summer, I will also start volunteering as an actress in disaster drills, for example, with the fire department or police. This way, I fill my weeks with enough fun and interesting things and can make a meaningful contribution to others.”Photos: Jackie Mulder
