“I have always dreamed of having my own butterfly garden”
We interview a North Maker monthly. Someone who makes Amsterdam North a bit more beautiful, better, or more enjoyable. This time: Nicky, initiator of the butterfly garden Mot in Mokum. They opened their doors on Saturday, May 18th.
Who are you?
“My name is Nicky Castricum. Once, long ago, I expressed the wish to start a butterfly garden. As a child, I was already fascinated by butterflies. My dream is coming true; on the grounds of the urban agriculture project NoordOogst, space is provided for inspiring new and natural projects, this month I will open the butterfly garden Mot in Mokum here.”
What is the purpose of Mot in Mokum?
“Mot in Mokum aims to provide education about butterflies. And to bring butterflies closer. A garden where butterflies come and go, where butterflies are attracted by the scents and colors of the plants and flowers. I come up with the educational projects and manage the butterfly garden, the nature maintenance is done by a group of friends, acquaintances, and volunteers.”
What makes this unique?
“Offering the experience of real nature; butterflies are part of this nature. We even offer the opportunity to stay overnight on this site and spot the night butterflies. We also want to give people tips: how to attract butterflies to your own environment? On your balcony or in your garden. I find it very beautiful to talk about butterflies in this way and show how complex nature can be.”Photo: Rob Beense
