The situation in Afghanistan is leading to an additional influx of refugees to the Netherlands, and we understand that people want to help. We are also receiving phone calls from people asking what they can do.

The group of evacuees temporarily housed in the naval barracks has since left the city, but did you know that there is also an AZC (Asylum Seekers Center) in Amsterdam where people await their residence permit or housing and have their first introduction to the Netherlands? The director of this AZC in Nieuw West informed us that unfortunately, his center is currently completely full with over 500 residents. So, you can also help them (or newcomers who have already found their own place in the city)! Do you want to do something for someone who has left their home and belongings for their own safety? Below, we list some options for you:

  1. Search in our job board / volunteer activities with or for refugees

There are several volunteer positions where you can actively contribute to helping refugees. How about assisting in family tracing or helping newcomer children feel at home?Check here for activities and job vacancies.

  1. Word Language Buddy!

The best start a newcomer in our country can get is by speaking Dutch. In addition to their Dutch language course, many recognized refugees are looking for people to practice the language with in real-life situations. The need for language buddies is significant. It only takes a few hours per week and can be done at a time and place that suits you. Check out theLanguage Coach Guidewhich organization suits you best.

More options? On Friday, August 27, Het Parool publishedthis articlewith suggestions on how we as Amsterdammers can help.

Of course, you can always contact us. We are happy to make an appointment to discuss with you what suits you. There is also a great need for organizations willing to place Statushouders as volunteers. If you would like to discuss this with one of our advisors, please feel free to call or email.
