Why Eefke listens to strangers
When the world sleeps, Eefke is ready by the phone. For six years, she has volunteered with the Luisterlijn (Listen Line) in Amsterdam, an anonymous helpline where people can share their feelings day and night via chat or phone. “Everyone needs to be truly heard,” she says. What drives someone to listen attentively to complete strangers time and time again—sometimes late into the night? In this story, Eefke candidly shares the power of human connection, grief, resilience, and the special value of a listening ear. “I’m happy to share my experiences.”
A voice in the night
“People call from 18 to 118 years old,” says Eefke. “The topics are very diverse: love, family relationships, grief, problems at work, or simply the need to talk. Many people feel lonely. Sometimes they have a large network, but it’s precisely the anonymity that allows them to be honest – without judgment.”
Eefke works one shift a week, either by phone or chat. Chat is used more often by young people and tends to be more direct. “My sole goal is to listen empathetically,” she says. “That often leads to a sense of relief or calm in the other person. The best part is when someone comes to an insight or finds the strength to make a decision during the conversation. And sometimes just getting it all out is enough.”
The art of listening
Volunteers at the Luisterlijn are well-trained. They learn to ask probing questions, to coordinate, and to create space. “I move along with the other person’s story and regularly check in: ‘Is this what you really want to discuss?’ Or: ‘Does this help you?’ Every caller is different. It requires mental space, but ultimately, it’s just a conversation between people.”
Still, some conversations are difficult. “Sometimes you hear harrowing stories, for example, from people in unsafe or hopeless situations. That affects you. But we learn not to take that home with us. We can always talk to colleagues, trainers, or even call the Luisterlijn ourselves to get things off our chest. You don’t have to bear it alone.”
Meaningful and rewarding work
Why does she do this? “Because it connects me with society,” says Eefke. “I learn so much about people, about life. It truly enriches me. During a difficult time in my own life, I experienced firsthand how powerful it is when someone truly listens to you. I’m happy to share that experience now. In addition to my work at a large company, this volunteer work brings balance, meaning, and energy. I can’t imagine my life without the Luisterlijn anymore.”
