Roelien is a volunteer at the Indische Buurt Festival.

“The Indische Buurt Festival is an annual beautiful, cozy, and especially local festival in Javastraat for and by residents in September. With local bands, art & culture, and the social initiatives and organizations that the Indische Buurt is rich in.” The driving force behind this festival is Stichting karrewiel.

Roelien is the market master. A fun role. “In addition to music, good food, and drinks, there is also a long line of stalls full of initiatives that are active in the Indische Buurt. From that part of the market, I get to be the market master. I know exactly who is at the initiatives market, I engage with them, and connect initiators with each other. It’s the day to meet each other, take a look in each other’s kitchens, and make arrangements to collaborate or learn from one another. My day is good when I see people engaging with each other and enjoying their time at the initiatives market.”

“I believe in small initiatives, residents who notice something, miss something, and come together to come up with ideas to make their neighborhood more beautiful and better. We want to make this visible to the neighborhood residents during the festival on September 6.”

On the initiative market, residents, initiatives, artists, and professional organizations stand side by side. There is attention for care, women’s emancipation, education, health, volunteer work, poverty, neighborhood stories, art and culture, diversity, in short, all the themes that play a role in people’s lives. Residents, both large and small parties, work every day to make the Indische Buurt a nice neighborhood. On this day, you are guaranteed to make new contacts. And there will undoubtedly be something among the stalls that makes you happy. People or a beautiful initiative to which you want to contribute your part.
