Volunteering is the backbone of a human city

Amsterdam is built on differences. On people with different backgrounds, stories, and opportunities. What unites us isn’t what we carry on paper—but how we hold on to each other in difficult times.

Volunteering demonstrates this every day. It’s the quiet strength of people who stand up for others. People who cook, listen, guide, comfort, teach, and connect. People who contribute without judgment, but with conviction, to a city where no one is excluded.

At Vrijwilligers Centrale Amsterdam (VCA), we see what’s possible when engagement is given the space it needs. We work with countless organizations and volunteers who support undocumented people. Not as an exception, but as a natural part of their work. Because humanity should never be punishable. Because care, help, and support should never be compromised.

Every person counts

It is alarming that initiatives focused on the most vulnerable in our society are now being threatened by legislation. Organizations that demonstrate daily what solidarity truly means—such as Het Koffiehuis, Doctors of the World, and ASKV—should not be punished for doing the right thing.

Volunteering fills the gaps left by policy. It’s not a luxury, but a necessity. Not a fringe benefit, but the heart of society.

We stand for a city where everyone matters. Where no one is reduced to a file. Where reaching out to those who need it is self-evident. Naturally, we have also signed the Kracht van Mokum (Strength of Amsterdam) statement .

Volunteers make Amsterdam human.

We will continue to support this. Today, tomorrow, and as long as necessary.

Together we ensure even more matches in volunteer work!
