Dear Amsterdammer,

You can make this city truly vibrant. With a little of your time and talent, you’ll make a bigger difference than you think. Volunteering isn’t a duty, but an opportunity—for yourself and for Amsterdam. You’ll discover new places, meet new people, and see new sides of yourself. You’ll laugh more often than you thought. Doors will open that would otherwise remain closed. You’ll help others, but you’ll grow just as much yourself. What you give, you’ll receive back twice over.

Amsterdam thrives on people who care about each other. Without volunteers, there would be no sports clubs, no festivals, no community centers, no care for each other. No vibrant city. Fortunately, many residents are already getting involved: 36% of adults volunteer, according to the report from The State of the City of Amsterdam . This is primarily the case for people between 35 and 54, parents with children, university graduates, and the self-employed. But that also means that the majority are not yet participating.

The need is growing. Amsterdam is aging. The gap between groups is widening. More and more people—young and old—are losing touch. Community organizations are short-staffed.
This is precisely the moment when the power of volunteer work matters: it connects people, allows sports to flourish, keeps culture alive, and energizes neighborhoods.
